Official Launch of Construction of China-Brazil Space Weather Joint Laboratory/Space Weather Laboratory in South America of CAS

On June 9 to 10, 2014, the second meeting of China-Brazil working team for ten-year space cooperation was held in INPE, and China assigned a delegation taking Li Guoping, director of CNSA as the head, whose members came from CNSA, CAST, Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, NSSC, etc. Main purpose of the meeting was to confirm implementation situation of first meeting minutes, promote bilateral cooperation in the fields of spaceflight, components, space science, talent training, etc., and make preparations for meeting of China-Brazil heads.

Space science is one of key cooperation fields of China and Brazil. During the meeting, the both parties confirmed development planning of recent and medium-and-long term cooperation, and refined the construction scheme of China-Brazil Space Weather Joint Laboratory/Space Weather Laboratory in South America of CAS. They also exchanged opinions and reached an agreement ultimately on the aspects of organization name of Joint Laboratory, entry of instruments and equipment, dispatched working personnel and post-doctor, and talent training, which laid solid foundation for smooth development of Joint Laboratory construction. Various cooperation agreements were brought into second meeting minutes of working team, which indicated official launch of construction of China-Brazil Space Weather Joint Laboratory/Space Weather Laboratory in South America of CAS. Wang Chi, deputy director of NSSC participated in above work, and carried out in-depth discussion with Space Weather Department of INEP on space science cooperation.

Depending on CAS, China-Brazil Space Weather Joint Laboratory/ Space Weather Laboratory in South America of CAS is subordinate to NSSC, and it is one organization with two brands, which is overseas scientific education base of CAS established with INPE together. The Laboratory is mainly responsible for joint observation and data collection of meridian chains of West Hemisphere, collaboratively carrying out near-earth space environment detection and research at low-latitude areas of East and West Hemispheres, completing the construction of near-earth space environment station of ST. Maria and training talents together. The project is officially launched in 2014, and construction tasks in first phase are planned to be completed at the end of 2016, and then shifted for operation.
