Official launch for deepening demonstration project of International Space Weather Meridian Circle Program

On November 12, 2009, launch meeting of key international cooperation project of CAS-“deepening demonstration of International Space Weather Meridian Circle Program” was officially held in Beijing. The meeting was hosted by Wang Chi, deputy director of NSSC. Cao Jinghua, deputy director of Bureau of International Co-operation Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang Zhenyu, division chief of International Organization Department, academician Wei Fengsi from NSSC and representatives of main participating units from NSSC, Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Institute of Atmospheric Physics, University of Science and Technology of China, National Astronomical Observatories, etc. attended the meeting.

Based on major national scientific and technological infrastructure project-Meridian Project under construction, “National Space Weather Meridian Circle Program” (International Meridian Circle for short) aims to make full use of overseas resources through international cooperation. The Program can extend to Russia northward along east longitude 120° and pass through relevant countries in Southern Asia, Australia, etc. It, together with meridian chain near 60° of western hemisphere, forms the first and unique space environment monitoring meridian circle around the earth.

As the first stage of the Program, its deepening demonstration project has been included in key international cooperation projects of CAS; the meeting was official launch meeting of International Meridian Circle Program, and main plan and schedule, personnel division, cooperation content, etc. of the Program were discussed. At the meeting, deputy director Wang Chi introduced program background and current progress, and deputy director Cao Jinghua and division chief Wang Zhenyu expressed the support for International Meridian Circle Program on behalf of Bureau of International Co-operation Chinese Academy of Sciences; they thought International Meridian Circle Program is a major innovation in the history of world’s space weather monitoring, which will promote the development of international space research that we take the initiative, and greatly elevate cognitive ability of Meridian Project to space environment and China’s status and influence in international space community. All experts attending the meeting put forward constructive opinions and suggestions on organization, construction, data sharing and research and other problems.

Finally, deputy director Wang Chi expressed thanks to leaders and experts of Bureau of International Co-operation Chinese Academy of Sciences, and indicated International Meridian Circle Program would be further implemented and refined according to opinions.
